And The Band Played On... |

George Echan with a nice jack everyone thought at first was a permit!
Okay, we're firmly in the season, the fish are on the flats, and the musicians are warming up. Is the long awaited permit sonata about to begin?
Joining us this week was frequent guest and permit pursuitist Steve Davenport with his long time friend Peter Carlucci. Steve's goal was for Peter to become a member of The Palometa "Club" and he gave up all the good shots until Peter did just that. Then he sat the experienced fly fisher but saltwater newbie down in the back of the boat and tagged a palometa for himself on the last day.
Ann McIntosh was back for her fourth season hoping to keep her impressive multiple-permit-per-year streak of six fish alive but had to settle for a bunch of bones and a tarpon. Intrepid in every way, this 70-year-old lady angler travels the world, often on her own, in search of big fish. She also runs a few race horses on the side just for the sport! George Echan also returned from last year and brought along his fishing pal Jack Provine. George's highlight of the week was when he cast to a school of large permit and was rewarded with a savage take. He fought the big fish for nearly a half hour with his guides guessing it was a permit somewhere in the 25-pound range. Well, they got the weight right but not the species. Turns out it was a big. bad jack! Really did feel like old friends week as returnees Earl Smith and Les Acree also flew in for a few days of fun in the sun. No permit for these two although Earl, the consummate angler, sure put in the effort. Lots of great bonefishing and great eats kept this Indiana duo happy. And finally we welcomed four first-timers tacking on some fishing to other activities in the area. Jeff Connsughton and Chris Putala showed up for a two day junket and had a blast, and Chris and Shannon Makuakane also did an Ascension Bay drive-by. It was a delight to meet this young couple from Oregon. Chris fished alone while Shannon relaxed and took in the "town". Chris was shown lots of permit but was unable to seal the deal. Next time!
