Second Annual Parker W. Lofgren Memorial Permit Cup

Don and Todd with the winning double!

When you honor a fallen friend with a permit fishing competition in his name, the fish better be there. They were, oh yeah, they certainly were...

The weather was pretty difficult through out the entire week, but on the days that the flats were practically unfishable the P-Club guides ducked into the mangroves and gave our sports shots at both tarpon and snook, both of which were landed (and one snook was rather tasty)! As for the celebrity species in this tournament, eight were bested; two by Charles Duke, two at the hands of Todd Snidow, two by Don MacKenzie (ending a seven-year dead streak for him!), one by Andrew Palmer and one by Bob Brouchard. Steel was put to at least double as many but the permit learning curve is a bit steep, as we all know! Bottom line: the second annual Parker W. Lofgren Memorial Cup was an awesome tribute to a truly good guy. We were only privileged to have him here twice but through his loyal friends his memory lingers and is cherished. Thanks to Don MacKenzie for his true blue streak that is the inspiration behind the PWL Memorial Cup as well as the corner stone for The Palometa Club. And Tournament Director Todd Snidow's would like the last word: "As usual, the Palometa Club was very comfortable, with AC and great food. Enjoyed many fine cocktails and cuban cigars after dinner each night. It's important to note that more than half of our anglers were fresh water fly guys, but two of those newbies landed permit. We also caught numerous bonefish to 5 lbs. and I went for the cycle, with two permit, two tarpon, a snook, and many bones. Even in the tough conditions, the Palometa Club guides were phenomenal, with the ability to see fish that I never would have alone and the knowledge of the bay to take us to flats out of the wind and back into the mangroves when necessary. And by the way, I thought you might like to know who won the PWL Cup. Charles Duke had a tremendous day on the flats, catching two permit in one day. As he chose the 1/2 week option, he left on Frontier Airlines thinking that he had the title all wrapped up. However, on our sixth and last day of fishing, Don Mackenzie and I each caught our second permit of the trip......and we caught them at the same time to pull off the very rare permit double. As Don and I compose the rules committee, we decided that this pushed us into a position of sharing the 2010 crown. Sorry Charles! I hope that you can join us next year."
