First Permit of the Season!

A bright omen for the future new papa!

And if you've been following our annual fishing reports you might have a good idea who caught it...

Yep, the indomitable Jason Kaplan himself, down for just a coule of days fishing at the end of the holiday break. Jason emailed us this report: "2009 was full of grim concerns about the economy, housing prices, foreclosures, etc. but I think things must have changed! As 2010 arrived so did the Permit. Two friends, my wife and I arrived at the Palometa Club on the evening of January 1st, 2010. We had an excellent feast, a perfect sleep and woke to the most amazing day of permit fishing I could have ever imagined! My friend and I had both fished for permit before with very few legitimate chances and figured we were in for more of the same. We hoped we'd be lucky to see a few fish and maybe get to cast at one or two. It couldn't have been further from our expectations. We should have realized that 2009 was truly over and 2010 was upon us. From the moment we were on the water we were basically "attacked" by permit from all angles. In one day alone we had over 15 thirty-foot or less chances to cast at permit from the boat and in wading in two feet of water to six feet of water. It was amazing! All of the permit were single travelers between 8 and 20 pounds, feeding and moving slowly. We had our casts and were both lucky enough to land palometa. Our guides were on fire. They were spotting fish from what seemed to be 500 feet away. These permit were in addition to a multitude of bones and two snook in the mangroves. The action was honestly non-stop. We even stopped the boat to check out two schools of dolphin on our ride from the lodge to the flats. Our first day of fishing in 2010 couldn't have been better. It was a great way to start the year and is likely a prediction of what's to come in 2010! And by the way....my wife is pregnant with our first child. Bring on 2010!" You rock Jason, and congratulations!
